Navigating Relationship Trauma

Navigating Relationship Trauma

From our very first breath until our last, there is nothing that shapes our lives more than the relationships we cultivate with: our parents, siblings, extended family, friends, coworkers, significant others, children, and most of all, ourselves. When one of these relationships betrays another (in any way), that connection becomes threadbare; threatening to snap apart at any moment. Within couples, it can make an even greater impact. Relationship trauma can result from infidelity, emotional or physical abuse, neglect, dishonesty, or manipulation, and it can be extremely difficult to overcome.

It is possible to move beyond the trauma with the right support. Healing takes time and begins with rebuilding trust . . . one brick at a time.

How Does Couples Therapy Help?

If you are considering therapy for relationship trauma, you are in a safe space at Kenōsis Counseling. We know how much strength it took to take this first step into healing, and we are here to walk this journey with you.

Relationship TraumaUsing science-based approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Brainspotting, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and the Gottman Method for Couples, we work with individuals and couples to develop a path forward.

Therapy for relationship trauma is not one-size-fits-all. Every relationship is unique, and the broken trust you have experienced is personal to you. As you work to heal from the effects of trauma in your relationship, trust in yourself and others will begin to take new shape and help you:

  • Reconnect with your emotions in a healthy way
  • Build boundaries based on respect, not fear
  • Redefine what a healthy relationship looks like
  • Understand how your experiences have shaped they way you respond to the world around you
  • Learn to recognize triggers
  • Develop effective communication skills

Whether you move forward independently, or as a couple, you will do so with clarity, confidence, and a new sense of direction.
